Week 21 January 20 -24

Hello parents,

The big information piece for parents this week is a reminder of our peanut policy. In the junior high we were not as strict with the peanut policy as we should have been, and things were allowed that were not peanut free or produced in a peanut free facility. (Such as Paul's donuts.) The big things to note is that there is no bakery in the area that is a peanut free facility - so no Paul's, Schnucks, Deirbergs etc...

So, we have been asked to be firm with our policy and remind parents about it. Thank you for reviewing it again and if you have any questions you can ask me or call the office and ask Mrs. Schmidt.

Here is a link that can help you make your choices.

Treats are still welcome, but please read labels or refer to this list. Thank you so much for understanding.

From the Family Handbook on the Website (by the way, is from 2012-13)
BIRTHDAY TREATS
Students may certainly celebrate their birthdays by bringing treats. The date should be approved by the teacher. Soda and candy are discouraged. We make every attempt to announce student and staff
birthdays during our morning announcements. All treats brought in for class must be
commercially packaged and peanut free. This means no homemade goods.

PEANUT POLICY
Zion Lutheran School recognizes the severity of peanut allergies. In order to aid students with these allergies we observe ourselves as a "peanut sensitive" school. This means that we only allow commercially packaged food lacking any peanut contact for all class treats and parties. We also have a designated peanut area for any student who brings something made with anything peanut related in our lunchroom. These are just a few of our steps in order to better protect those with peanut allergies.

Auction Round Up 2014 Auction Round Up time is here! The Round Up is for 2 weeks, January 27 - February 3rd. During those weeks parents can bring in new items to be donated for the auction (theme baskets, electronics, etc.). Please see form that was sent home in Friday folders.

Jump Rope For Heart: Donation/participation information is coming home today in their Friday papers.

Trivia Night is Saturday, February 8th. Have you signed up for Trivia Night yet? Get a table of 8 together for a night of fun.  If you would like to volunteer instead of take part in the trivia side of things, please let Sharon Wilmes know, they can always use the help.

Grandparents Day is Friday, March 14.  Just as a long distance reminder. It is a noon dismissal day.  Book fair will also take place that day.

Week 20 January 13 - 17

Hello parents,

Congratulations to 7M's Grace Wiesner our school spelling bee champion. The winning word? "bulbous" She spelled many difficult words against 4th through 8th graders to take the win. Runner up was 5th grader Ella Holt and 3rd place belonged to 7C's Angel Feigenbaum.

We are starting the human body in science and the kids are excited to get started with that. The blue constitution book is coming home for history and we continue to work hard reading Where the Red Fern Grows. Students should still be reading an AR book for their independent reading. The point total is still 18 for AR for 7th graders. Red Fern will not count for an AR test.

National Lutheran Schools week is coming up. See below for the dress days.
